State v. Robertson
PUPPY BEATEN
ACTION NEEDED: CONTACT PROSECUTOR (Brevard County, FL)
Scott David Robertson allegedly beat a 13 week old puppy, Holly,
because she chewed on his baseball cap. Holly's back was broken
and she had to be euthanized. Under Florida law, Robertson could
receive a maximum of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

State v. Howell
PUPPY DRAGGED ACTION NEEDED: CONTACT PROSECUTOR (Lake
County, Ohio)
Alan C. Howell was charged with a misdemeanor for allegedly
tying Sid, a puppy, to his truck and dragging the animal through
two towns. He reportedly threw the puppy in the back
of his truck and spent the rest of the day
drinking in a bar. The puppy was taken to the Lake County Humane
Society. He was so battered and mangled that he had to be euthanized.
Unfortunately, in Ohio, animal cruelty is a misdemeanor
offense, so the maximum sentence Howell can receive will be
a $750 fine and 90 days in jail.

SCRUFFY'S KILLERS CONVICTED (Kansas City, KS)
The four young men who videotaped themselves beating
and burning to death a little Yorkshire terrier named Scruffy
in June, 1997 have been convicted of animal cruelly and felony
arson.
Judge Wayne Lampson sentenced Marcus Rodriguez to two
years and three months in prison for arson (for burning Scruffy)
and one year in county jail for animal cruelty, Lance Arsenault
was sentenced to one year and ten months in prison for arson
and one year in county jail for animal cruelty. Jose Gutierrez
and Richard Golubski were given suspended sentences, placed
on probation and must undergo psychiatric counseling.
ALDF provided important felony arson information to
prosecutor Terra Moorhead, enabling her to bring felony arson
charges, in addition to misdemeanor cruelty charges against
the perpetrators. ALDF attorney member, Greg Miller, also assisted
with research.
